# Policy Underwriting for New Auto Applicants When a new auto insurance application comes in, the Underwriting Team first pulls the applicant's driving record, then runs a credit-based insurance score, then checks the application against the Underwriting Guidelines. If the applicant meets standard guidelines, the Underwriting Team approves the policy directly in the Policy Administration System. If the applicant falls outside standard guidelines — for example, three or more moving violations in the past three years — the application requires Underwriting Exception Approval instead of standard approval. Policy requires all approved policies to be issued within 3 business days of a complete application. In practice, the Underwriting Team tries to turn around clean applications same-day, since agents get frustrated with delays on easy cases. Applicants under 21 are automatically routed to Underwriting Exception Approval regardless of driving record, per the Young Driver Policy.
